Coronavirus news latest – World’s WORST excess deaths ‘in England and Wales’ as London braces for new covid lockdown

ENGLAND and Wales had the world’s highest excess death rates during the first wave of , a new study has found.

The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, blames Test and Trace failings, a late lockdown and our unhealthy population for the 57,300 extra fatalities – an increase of 37%.

The study comes as Greater Manchester and Lancashire potentially move into a Tier 3 lockdown to stem the rising tide of Covid cases

The move would place both areas on “very high alert,” with pubs forced to shut if they cannot operate as restaurants and households banned from mixing, according to Sky .

Meanwhile Sadiq Khan has piled pressure on the PM to put London on an “inevitable” lockdown in the next few days, banning households from mixing indoors if cases jump over 100 per 100,000.
