Globacom has signed a landmark Internet connectivity agreement with the Imo State Government through its Ministry of Digital Economy and e-Governance. The partnership is a key step in the State’s plan to build a digital economy, implement e-governance, and establish a Smart City in Owerri.

Described as the largest single fixed Internet connectivity project in Globacom’s Enterprise Business Group history, the deal highlights the company’s role in delivering advanced telecommunications infrastructure and digital solutions across Nigeria.

Under the agreement, Globacom will provide high-capacity Internet connectivity to critical locations. These include the Smart City project in Owerri, home to 15 mega buildings, the Ministry of Digital Economy and e-Governance, and the Imo State University for Innovation, Science and Technology, formerly Imo State Polytechnic.

The Glo 1 submarine cable, which links Nigeria directly to Europe through Globacom’s privately owned fibre optic network, will form the backbone of the project. It provides high bandwidth, minimal latency, and secure connections, supporting the State’s digital transformation and improving public service delivery.

“We are honoured by the confidence reposed in Globacom by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Imo State, Chief Hope Uzodinma and his team,” the company said. “This partnership is a testament to our technical capability, nationwide coverage, and proven efficiency in delivering enterprise grade connectivity solutions. We will work closely with the State’s technical team to ensure timely delivery of the project and to support Imo’s vision of a thriving digital economy.”

Globacom praised the Imo State Government for its focus on digital transformation, youth empowerment, and technology driven governance. The company noted that investments in digital infrastructure and training initiatives for young people will create jobs, encourage innovation, and accelerate sustainable economic growth.

“Imo State is setting a remarkable example for other states in Nigeria by leveraging technology to improve governance, education, and business efficiency,” Globacom added. “We applaud the Governor’s focus on empowering the youth and building an innovation driven economy. This partnership aligns perfectly with Globacom’s mission to power Nigeria’s digital future.”

With a strong presence across Nigeria and a network spanning West Africa, Globacom remains a leader in digital connectivity solutions for both public and private sectors. Its infrastructure, anchored on the Glo 1 international fibre network and extensive metro fibre coverage, ensures institutions, governments, and businesses can rely on seamless, secure, and scalable connectivity.

As the digital economy reshapes societies globally, Globacom called on other states in the South East and across Nigeria to follow Imo State’s lead and embrace strategic digital partnerships.

“The future belongs to states and nations that invest in technology and connectivity,” the company noted. “We encourage other governments to partner with Globacom in building digital infrastructures that can power education, commerce, governance, and innovation. Together, we can strengthen regional economies, create opportunities for millions, and drive poverty out of our communities.”

Globacom reaffirmed its commitment to delivering world class connectivity, superior service quality, and innovative digital solutions that enable Nigerians to thrive in an increasingly connected world.
