ICYMI: Zoom to lift 40-minute call limit on free accounts at Christmas

Zoom, a US-based video chat company, says it would remove its 40-minute call limit globally for free accounts ahead of the festive season packed with several holidays.

Prior to the announcement, free accounts were limited to 40-minute calls, which abruptly end at the limit.

In a blog post on Thursday, the online video service said the initiative was informed by the coronavirus pandemic which has altered how families celebrate the festive season together.

The company said the development was in recognition of Hanukkah, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, and Kwanzaa celebrations.

It added that the gesture was in appreciation of the company’s users during what has been an “extraordinary time” and to enable families socialise safely amid global fight against the novel disease.

“COVID-19 has changed how we live, work, and celebrate in 2020, and like everything else this year, the holiday season doesn’t look the same,” it said.

“As a token of appreciation to our users during an extraordinary time, we’re removing the 40-minute limit on free Zoom accounts for all meetings globally for several upcoming special occasions.

“Whether coming together on the final day of Hanukkah, celebrating Christmas, ringing in the New Year, or marking the last days of Kwanzaa, those connecting with friends and family won’t get cut short.”

According to the company, the restriction would be lifted “on December 17, 2020, 10am (ET) – December 19, 2020, 6am (ET); December 23, 2020,10am (ET) – December 26, 2020; 6am (ET) and December 30, 2020, 10am (ET) – January 2, 2021, 6am (ET).”
