Labour’s unsustainable and illogical Covid policy would cause untold misery

Labour’s unsustainable and illogical Covid policy would cause untold misery

Cruel lockdown

LABOUR’S new Covid policy — shutting down the country for a fortnight or more whenever cases spike — is madness.

Supporters of the plan might think advocating the strictest possible lockdown makes them look caring.

But truly compassionate politicians would balk at the human cost. During the first lockdown, Age UK reported a huge rise in calls from the lonely and Childline was overwhelmed by desperate kids stuck in abusive homes.

It’s clear, too, that the drastic measure is disproportionate. When the virus hit the whole country in April, a national lockdown was justifiable.

Now, though, spikes are more concentrated. We struggle to see why wiping out businesses in Suffolk — where just 42 in 100,000 have the virus — would do anything to stop cases creeping up in Nottingham, 200 miles away.

“Repeated circuit-breaker national lockdown” might score highly in buzzword bingo.

But don’t be fooled: the unsustainable and illogical policy would cause untold misery.

EU codswallop

MICHAEL Gove is right: the French economy will be in huge trouble without a Brexit deal.

Which is why it’s time for President Emmanuel Macron to swallow his pride and back down over his demands on fishing — one of the biggest obstacles to an EU/UK trade agreement.

We made it clear when we voted for Brexit that independence meant taking back control of our waters. So French fishermen have had more than four years to work out how they will make a living once the UK leaves the EU.

If they’re still floundering, that’s a headache for Macron.

But he’s got no business taking out his frustration on us.

X-rated system

BUSINESSES in the North buckling under sky-high business rates are proof that the hated shops tax isn’t working.

It’s crystal clear that the rates system isn’t fit for purpose in the 21st century.

Our high streets were already hollowing out before the pandemic. And a third of pubs are struggling to make ends meet, with rates a massive factor.

It’s time to rip the system up and start again.

Gift of the jab

GOOD at last! At least one vaccine might be ready as early as December.

2020 has been miserable and winter in semi-lockdown is a grim prospect.

But with a jab that could snuff out Covid for good in the offing, 2021 really could be a happy new year.
