YouTube suspends Trump’s channel — after Twitter, Facebook ban

YouTube, an American online video-sharing platform, has suspended the account of US President Donald Trump for at least a week after it earned a strike under the platform’s policies.

In a statement on its official Twitter account on Wednesday, the video-sharing service said it removed new content uploaded to Trump’s account for violating its policies and “in light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence.”

The statement added that comments on the president’s channel will be disabled indefinitely for safety reasons.

“After review, and in light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence, we removed new content uploaded to Donald J Trump’s channel for violating our policies. It now has its first strike and is temporarily prevented from uploading new content for a minimum of seven days,” the statement read.

“Given the ongoing concerns about violence, we will also be indefinitely disabling comments on President Trump’s channel, as we’ve done to other channels where there are safety concerns found in the comments section.”

Although Trump’s YouTube account is still visible and past videos may still be viewed, it is, however, unclear what the deleted video contained.

In the wake of the violence that rocked Capitol Hill on January 6, YouTube had warned that channels that post false contents on its platform and violate its policies will receive a strike.

The Google-owned platform has now joined the growing list of social media, online services and companies that decided to ban or suspend Trump over fears he might use social media to incite more unrest.

TheCable had reported how Twitter imposed a permanent ban on the president’s handle, while Facebook and Instagram shut his accounts indefinitely due to concerns his posts may incite violence.
