The two titans of English football Liverpool and Manchester United, lined up. Jürgen Klopp’s Reds, spearheaded by their Egyptian King, Mo Salah, looked dead set on asserting dominance, while Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils, with the ever-influential Bruno Fernandes pulling the strings, were ready to cause a major upset.

From the first whistle, it was a proper ding-dong battle. Liverpool, playing their high-octane ‘heavy metal’ football, pressed high, with Luis Díaz and Cody Gakpo absolutely buzzing around the United defence like persistent wasps.

Football fans across MTN Nigeria’s EPL Watch Parties in Abuja, Lagos, Rivers, Abia and Imo states were ready with their predictions of the evening. While the fans experienced an intense first half of the match, the second half began with United looking to hit back but struggling to find that final bit of quality. Liverpool’s defence stood firm, looking fairly unflappable.

Then, the inevitable happened. In the 78th minute, a lovely bit of link-up play saw Cody Gakpo, the man for the big occasion, put the icing on the cake for Liverpool. 1-0. United, to their credit, pushed and probed, bringing on fresh legs to fight back. And in the 82nd minute, they found a lifeline as Mason Mount, introduced late on, hammered a 25-yard strike that took a huge deflection. It looped high and dropped into the net with a 1-1.

Just two minutes later, in the 84th minute, a Manchester United player Harry Maguire hit the net with a  2-1 goal for the club, giving United a win for the first time under Amorim to move up to ninth place, with 13 points from eight games.

While the United fans might have left with heavy hearts, the spectacle and atmosphere created a good vibe among fans. MTN Nigeria ensured that everyone, regardless of allegiance, had an exciting day out at the EPL Watch Parties across the country.
