2023 presidential election: INEC vows to punish officials for wrongdoing

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said it would punish ad-hoc staff or collation personnel who may have been found wanting following the conduct of the presidential and National Assembly elections last Saturday.

INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this known at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, on Saturday in Abuja.

According to him, it will begin with not engaging those involved in wrongdoing in next Saturday’s governorship election.

“All staff found to be negligent, whether they are regular or ad hoc officials, including Collation and Returning Officers, must not be involved in forthcoming elections.

“RECs must also immediately initiate disciplinary action where prima facie evidence of wrongdoing has been established,” Yakubu said.

Yakubu also told the RECs that it was important for the electoral body to review performances from Saturday’s election.
