Afe Babalola Breaks Silence On Farotimi’s Detention

Renowned legal luminary and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), has addressed the controversy surrounding the detention of Dele Farotimi, a lawyer and activist, in connection with allegations of defamation.

Speaking publicly for the first time about the matter, Babalola clarified that his concerns stem from what he described as defamatory statements made in a book authored by Farotimi. According to Babalola, the publication contained multiple false claims that questioned his integrity and accused his prestigious law firm of unethical practices, including corrupting the judiciary.

In his statement, Babalola emphasized the importance of protecting his hard-earned reputation, built over decades of legal practice and public service. “My name and legacy are my most treasured possessions,” he said. “I have always upheld the highest ethical standards in my professional career and have contributed significantly to the development of the legal profession in Nigeria.”

He expressed disappointment over what he termed “baseless and damaging allegations” in Farotimi’s book. Babalola pointed out that such accusations not only undermine his personal integrity but also cast aspersions on the credibility of the judiciary, an institution he has diligently served and supported throughout his career.

Farotimi’s detention has sparked debates about freedom of expression and the limits of defamation in Nigeria. While some argue that his detention infringes on his rights as a citizen, others view it as a necessary legal step to address potential harm caused by unsubstantiated claims.

Babalola, however, maintained that the legal action was not intended to stifle dissent or freedom of speech but to seek redress for the reputational damage caused by the defamatory content.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria reiterated his commitment to upholding justice and fairness, urging legal professionals and public figures to exercise caution and responsibility in their statements. “While constructive criticism is vital in any society, it should be based on truth and supported by evidence,” he added
