Bauchi Governor revealed that Buhari’s decision not to sign amended electoral act favours aspirants like him

Bala Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi State and a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Aspirant, has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari’s failure to sign the amended Electoral Act 2022 was beneficial to aspirants like him.

He stated this on Wednesday, following a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, the legislative process of amending the electoral act did not begin on time, and signing now may violate National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines for elections, so the less the merrier.

Governor Mohammed made the remarks while fielding questions from State House Correspondents following a delegation’s thank you visit to President Buhari for the inauguration of a N23.5 billion World Bank-assisted Upgraded Bauchi Township Water Supply Scheme.

His remarks came in response to pressure on President Buhari to sign an amendment to current Section 84 (8), which states that delegates voting at indirect primaries and national conventions of political parties to elect candidates for elections must be democratically elected.

The non-assent implies that statutory delegates, such as elected political office holders, political appointees, and political party executive officers, are ineligible to vote in primaries to nominate candidates for the 2023 general election.
