Corps Member Viral Video: be More Tolerant of Critics – Trade Union Congress Defend Ushie Uguamaye Rights to Speak out over Hardship
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has weighed in on the controversy surrounding a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, who was allegedly threatened by NYSC officials for criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration. TUC President, Festus Osifo, argued that Uguamaye’s outburst was a result of frustration and advised the government to be more tolerant of critics.
According to Osifo, the government should not personalize criticisms, but rather develop resilience and understand that Nigerians are frustrated, hungry, and tired. He emphasized that Uguamaye, as a young NYSC member, posed no threat to the government and was simply expressing her personal frustration.
The controversy began when Uguamaye posted a TikTok video criticizing the government’s economic reforms, which have led to widespread hardship. The video went viral, catching the attention of NYSC officials, who allegedly threatened her and demanded that she delete the video.
While the NYSC has yet to release an official statement on the matter, the TUC has come out in support of Uguamaye, urging the government to be more tolerant of critics. Osifo cautioned, however, that critics should express themselves within acceptable norms and with decorum.
