The United States government has announced a project that would boost the war against illicit drugs in Nigeria.

The support will strengthen forensic and chemical analysis, intelligence gathering and prosecution capability of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) is coordinating the intervention.

NDLEA Director of Media, Femi Babafemi made the announcement in a statement on Monday.

The support followed requests by the Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd) during a series of meetings with American officials in Abuja and Washington, D.C.

The approval letter to Marwa indicated that the project will be implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, in Nigeria.

The support will boost NDLEA’s intelligence-led investigations through diverse resources, legal books, e-library for prosecution and others.

Babafemi said the agency would be better equipped to prosecute cases with strong evidence, using improved collection, handling and custodial procedures.

The U.S. government’s communication expressed confidence that the project “will be an important step in advancing our shared goal of a united, peaceful and stable Nigeria.”
