EPL: He was scared of the ball – Hasselbaink pinpoints Chelsea’s real problem

Former Chelsea striker, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has said that Chelsea’s goal-scoring problem goes beyond Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the other strikers.

Hasselbaink believes the blame for his old club’s lack of goals lies in the midfield.

Graham Potter’s side took the lead against relegation battling Nottingham Forest on Sunday through Raheem Sterling.

The West London side were pegged back in the second half by a Serge Aurier volley.

Aubameyang wasted the Blues’ one and only clear chance in the second half as he missed a great chance to score late on.

It means that Chelsea have now only managed to net 20 times in 16 games.

The club’s hierarchy has been criticised for letting Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner leave.

But Hasselbaink told Sky Sports, “It’s not only the strikers who can score goals, it’s also midfielders that score goals and provide goals, and defenders even.

“How many goals have the midfielders got? It’s not only the strikers. Nothing would have changed if [Lukaku and Werner] were here.

“They had Werner who is scared of the ball when it comes in the box, so they’re not going to be better with them!

“The problem is not the number nine, it’s more, it’s several positions.”
