EPL: He’s a threat – Neville, Carragher back forward to make England’s World Cup squad

Former Premier League stars, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have backed Brentford forward Ivan Toney to make England’s 26-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Neville believes Toney is a threat to opponents, while Carragher said he has a class, adding that he will be going to Qatar.

Toney received his first international call-up last month for the Nations League games against Italy and Germany.

The 26-year-old scored a brace in Brentford’s 2-0 win over Brighton on Friday night.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: “The threat that he poses, his hard work, leading the line. Look at those appearances and goals, it’s a magnificent record.

“I think he will have been very frustrated to have gone away with England and not even taken part, but I think Gareth [Southgate] will have been measuring him in terms of how he was with the squad, how he’s settled in.

“I think Ivan Toney is someone who, if he can keep in form in the next couple of weeks, he will be in with a great chance of going [to the World Cup].”

On his part, Carragher added: “That is absolutely fantastic from Ivan Toney. This guy’s not just a target man, he’s a class act, he really is. You can see with this finish here. He’s got, class.

“That is why he’s in the England squad at the moment and that’s why if he keeps doing things like that, he will be going to Qatar.”
