Ex-President Jonathan’s convoy involved in fatal accident, two policemen confirmed dead

A vehicle in the convoy of former President Goodluck Jonathan was on Wednesday involved in a crash.

No fewer than two persons were said to have died in the accident and two others, who are policemen, were injured.

According to eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred around the Bill Clinton Drive area of the Federal Capital Territory around 4.30pm.

The former President, it was learnt, was on his way from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to his residence in Abuja when the crashed occurred.

It was further gathered that the former President escaped unhurt while those injured were rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja

When contacted, the Federal Road Safety Commission Corps’ Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, confirmed the incident.

He, however, said those rushed to the hospital were responding to treatment.

Kazeem said, “It was his (Jonathan’s) convoy. Nothing happened to him and his car was not involved in the accident.

“The vehicles in his convoy had a bash and two persons died, two others are at the National Hospital and are recuperating. Seven cars were, however, involved in the accident.”

The Public Relations Officers of the National Hospital in Abuja, Tayo Haastrup, also confirmed the incident.

“The former President was not involved; it was one of the convoy (vehicles).  We have two of them (in the hospital) and they are stable,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jonathan has described the death of two policemen attached to him as unfortunate.

His position was contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ikechukwu Eze.

The statement partly read, “The former President, who described the incident as painful and heart-rending, stated that the sudden death of the two security details has thrown him into deep mourning.

“Dr. Jonathan noted with sadness that the deceased, Inspectors Ibrahim Abazi and Yakubu Toma, were fine officers who were dedicated to their duties and service to the nation.

“Two other officers sustained injuries in the accident which involved a car conveying the security men. They were rushed to a hospital in Abuja where they are responding to treatment.”
