FATAL CRASH IN MOTORWAYS CLAIMS DISPATCH RIDER’S LIFE AS LASTMA’S SWIFT RESPONSE PREVENTS FURTHER TRAGEDY

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) profoundly regrets to report a fatal road traffic incident that occurred at Motorways inward Estate area of Alapere, Lagos, culminating in the untimely demise of a dispatch “AOC” rider.

Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of an empty ‘NIPCO’ tanker (TTN-776ZQ) operating at an excessive velocity inward the Estate axis of Alapere, violently collided with the moving dispatch rider. The devastating impact resulted in the instantaneous death of the rider, casting a sombre atmosphere over the vicinity.

In the immediate aftermath, Officers of LASTMA exhibited remarkable alacrity and professionalism by arriving expeditiously at the scene. Their prompt intervention proved decisive in forestalling a potential breakdown of law and order, as a group of enraged dispatch riders had converged and launched an attack on the tanker driver.

Displaying commendable composure and tactical restraint, LASTMA personnel successfully extricated the tanker driver from the hostile crowd. He was subsequently transferred to Officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), who conveyed him to a nearby medical facility for urgent attention as he had sustained severe injuries.

In a bid to reinforce security and restore normalcy, operatives from the Alausa Police Station were swiftly deployed to the scene. Their presence provided critical support in dispersing the agitated gathering and averting any further acts of violence.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased dispatch rider, praying that Almighty God grants them the fortitude to endure the irreparable loss.

He further issued a strong admonition to tanker drivers and all categories of road users, particularly motorists to exercise utmost caution and adhere strictly to prescribed speed limits and traffic regulations.

Bakare-Oki reiterated that reckless driving and excessive speed remain predominant factors contributing to avoidable road fatalities across the State.

“This unfortunate incident accentuates the urgent need for heightened vigilance and a collective recommitment to road safety. Every road user bears a fundamental responsibility to act prudently and safeguard human life,” he stated.

While the empty tanker and wreck of the dispatched bike were handed over to the Police by LASTMA personnel, the case was immediately transferred to the appropriate authorities for thorough investigation and possible prosecution.
