Feedthestreets 2025: Brings Hope to Boys at Lagos State Correctional Centre

On New Year’s Day, Feedthestreets Human Development Foundation, a non-profit organization, extended a heartfelt gesture of support by visiting the Lagos State Correctional Centre for Boys in Oregun, Ikeja. The foundation donated essential items and engaged the boys in recreational activities to bring joy, hope, and a sense of belonging.

The founder of the foundation, Ms. Ibukunoluwa Omolasho, emphasized the importance of making the boys feel loved and valued. “We want the male child to understand they are important and cared for. Their happiness and transformation are what matter most to us,” she said.

Feedthestreets Foundation donated items including toiletries, food supplies, cooking ingredients, game materials like Ludo boards and footballs, and other essentials. The day also featured interactive activities such as dancing, a talent showcase, and football games to foster a sense of community and uplift the boys.

Inspiring the Boys’ Dreams

During the visit, the boys shared their dreams and aspirations with the foundation, expressing their hopes of becoming web developers, medical doctors, mechanical engineers, musicians, and more. Many voiced their desire to use their talents to serve Nigeria and make meaningful contributions to society.

A Commitment Born from Passion

Ms. Omolasho recounted how her passion for youth development began in 2019 during her internship at a public school in Lagos. She observed the detrimental effects of period poverty on young girls and felt compelled to act.

“When I saw some young girls using cloth and other unhygienic materials as sanitary products, I realized the urgent need for empowerment and education. I discussed the situation with my colleagues, and together, we invited a specialist to educate the girls on proper menstrual hygiene. We also donated sanitary towels to support them and address their immediate needs,” she shared.

Understanding the Lagos State Correctional Centre

The Vice Principal of the correctional center, Mr. Segun Adenubi, explained the facility’s role as a haven for boys aged 13 to 17, aimed at providing temporary shelter and facilitating mental and social transformation.

Mr. Adenubi outlined the categories of boys housed at the center:

Children in Conflict with the Law: Minors who have committed crimes that could warrant adult sentencing.

Children in Contact with the Law: Minors removed from the streets and given temporary shelter while awaiting reunification with their families.

Beyond Parental Control: Children whose parents are unable to provide proper care or guidance.

Care and Supervision: Vulnerable children lacking adequate shelter or family support.

He noted that not all boys at the center are there for criminal offenses. “Some are victims of poor parental care or unfortunate circumstances. Our role is to investigate their cases thoroughly and ensure proper rehabilitation before reuniting them with their families,” he said.

Mr. Adenubi also highlighted the importance of post-care monitoring, stating, “What matters is what they do after they leave here. The ministry has a unit dedicated to tracking their progress to ensure lasting transformation.”

Ms. Omolasho further explained the foundation’s decision to focus on boys for this outreach. “While we often advocate for the girl child, it’s equally important to show the male child love and support. We want them to feel included and valued,” she said.
