Gunmen Run Riot In Anambra State, Scores Injured

It was a terrible situation on Sunday, the 30th of August, when unknown gunmen stormed an area of Awka, Anambra State, popularly known as Amaenyi and opened gunfire on unsuspecting members of the public.

The gunmen were said to be in a Corolla car when they stormed the area, opened fire in the densely populated neighborhood, mostly populated by indigenes of ‘Aymom na Okpala’ community, as those who were mostly in Beer Parlours, a betting shop and article shops around and close to the place of gunfire, started running for safety, causing pandemonium, as some persons were said to have sustained gunshot wounds and injuries, during the period of gunfire.

The unknown gunmen afterwards, drove towards another part of the Amaenyi area, close to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Nkwelle Awka and started shooting indiscriminately again, a man was shot dead at the scene with a headshot, opening his brain and spilling the brain to the floor, with another person, sustaining a gunshot injury.

The reasons for the shooting and storming of the area by the unknown gunmen has not been ascertained but Awka has been reportedly plagued with unending cult war and clashes over the years unabated but the town has enjoyed relative peace for about a year now before the shooting today.

Night life has been completely destroyed in that part of Awka city, as residents constantly live in fear yet even with the town hosting key government agencies and parastatals, the insecurity in Awka and environs seems not to abate.
