The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has stirred widespread reactions across Nigeria after making a bold declaration about his growing influence, power and wealth since leaving office as Governor of Ebonyi State.

Umahi, who served two terms as governor before his appointment into President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, openly stated that his political stature has increased significantly, describing himself as “ten times bigger” and “very dangerous” compared to his time as governor.

“I am ten times bigger now than I was when I was a governor. I am very dangerous now. God has blessed the Umahi family beyond wealth, and we are capable of funding anything,” the Minister said while addressing supporters.

The remarks, delivered with confidence, have triggered intense public debate, with critics questioning the implications of a serving minister openly boasting about personal wealth and political power in a country grappling with economic hardship, rising unemployment and infrastructure deficits.

Supporters of the former Ebonyi governor, however, argue that Umahi’s comments reflect his political growth, national relevance and access to wider opportunities since joining the federal government. They insist that his influence should be judged by performance, particularly in the execution of critical road and infrastructure projects under his supervision as Minister of Works.

Umahi, a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), has remained one of President Tinubu’s most vocal allies. His appointment was widely seen as a reward for his loyalty to the ruling party during the 2023 general elections.

Political analysts warn that such statements, while possibly intended to inspire supporters, could deepen public mistrust in governance and reinforce perceptions of political elitism, especially at a time when Nigerians are demanding accountability, transparency and humility from public office holders.

As reactions continue to trail Umahi’s comments, many Nigerians are calling on the Minister to focus more on delivering tangible results in road construction and infrastructure development rather than projecting personal power and wealth.

The controversy adds to the growing scrutiny of senior government officials and highlights the delicate balance between political confidence and public sensitivity in Nigeria’s evolving democratic space.
