IHS Nigeria restates commitment to a more Sustainable Telecommunications and Technology Sector in Nigeria

IHS Nigeria has restated its commitment to the evolution of a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive telecommunications and technology sector in Nigeria. The company stated this at a recent stakeholder breakfast session organized by the Telecommunications and Technology Sustainability Working Group (TTSWG) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

The breakfast session which held on Thursday September 17 at the Abuja Continental Hotel brought together representatives of regulatory agencies, industry players, the academia, development organizations, tech startups and other key stakeholders from across the industry to discuss the sector’s sustainability priorities. In particular, the session provided an opportunity for the TTSWG to socialize their Strategy for 2025–2030 and propose sustainability metrics for the Nigerian telecommunications industry to the industry regulator, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).

Speaking on behalf of IHS Nigeria, the Director, Sustainability, Titilope Oguntuga, welcomed the engagement and described the stakeholder dialogue as important to advancing practical sustainability solutions across the sector. She said the gathering provided an opportunity for stakeholders to take an honest look at the progress made and identify areas requiring further action to strengthen collaboration around environmental, social and governance priorities.

“TTSWG’s progress reflects a shared and enduring conviction: that technology and innovation remain among the most effective tools available to address the sector’s challenges. This conviction continues to guide the work and partnerships shaping the telecommunications and technology space today”.

Oguntuga highlighted the importance of collaboration between industry players, regulators and other stakeholders in addressing issues affecting the sustainability and resilience of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. She noted that TTSWG provides a platform for driving policy dialogue, research, capacity building, and partnerships around shared sector priorities.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the TTSWG Board, Engr. Abdu-Waya Mohammed, said the Strategy provides a framework for strengthening collaboration around sustainability in the telecommunications and technology ecosystem.

He noted that the strategy focuses on areas including the transition to renewable energy, digital inclusion, stronger governance frameworks, innovation through collaboration, and sustainable development. He also emphasized that the strategy remains a draft developed through the TTSWG Secretariat’s stakeholder engagement process and would benefit from further input from industry and other stakeholders.

Also speaking at the session, the Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Climate Innovation Center (NCIC), Bankole Oloruntoba, described TTSWG as a multi stakeholder platform established to advance sustainability across the telecommunications and technology ecosystem.

He explained that the Working Group’s focus extends across sustainable energy adoption, digital inclusion, e waste management, gender and capacity development, youth participation, innovation, community development and policy advocacy.

Oloruntoba also highlighted the Working Group’s ongoing initiatives, including the Innovation Makers Challenge (IMC), research and knowledge sharing activities, webinars and programmes focused on recognizing and supporting innovation within the technology and telecommunications ecosystem.

A key component of the session was the presentation of the proposed sustainability metrics framework for the Nigerian telecommunications industry by Dr. Chris Uwaje, a Board Member of the Telecommunications and Technology Sustainability Working Group. 

The proposed framework seeks to provide measurable indicators for assessing sustainability performance across different areas including energy and decarbonization, digital inclusion and affordability, digital integrity and consumer trust, infrastructure resilience, governance and waste reduction.

Dr. Uwaje stressed that the metrics are still under development and are being presented for stakeholder review and feedback, with the intention of strengthening the framework before consideration by relevant regulatory authorities.

The engagement also featured contributions from various stakeholders including a representative of the EVC of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Helen Obi who is the Commission’s Director, Digital Economy Department. Mrs. Obi acknowledged the areas of alignment between the Commission’s priorities and the issues being advanced by TTSWG, including broadband expansion, resilient connectivity, digital skills, local device manufacturing and the development of assistive technologies for people with disabilities.

The NCC also encouraged TTSWG to formally submit its proposed framework and other relevant documents to the Commission for detailed review and feedback.

An open interactive session during the programme, allowed participants to raise questions and make recommendations on the proposed strategy and sustainability metrics. Contributions included calls for greater access to financing for technology and telecommunications innovation, alignment with relevant international standards, stronger consideration of accessibility for people with disabilities and clearer pathways for translating research findings into measurable policy and industry outcomes.

The TTSWG encouraged participants to continue providing feedback through its stakeholder engagement channels and to support the expansion of its membership, particularly across Abuja and Northern Nigeria.

In her closing remarks, the Vice Chairperson, TTSWG Board, Dr. Wunmi Hassan, called on stakeholders to remain engaged with the Working Group and support efforts to build a stronger sustainability ecosystem for Nigeria’s telecommunications and technology sectors.

She also expressed appreciation to IHS Nigeria and NCIC for their support towards advancing the TTSWG agenda and encouraged organizations across the ecosystem to participate in the Working Group’s programmes and initiatives.

The Abuja engagement forms part of TTSWG’s broader efforts to strengthen stakeholder participation and build a coordinated approach to sustainability within Nigeria’s telecommunications and technology sectors.
