At the 2025 Annual General Conference of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), guest speaker Barrister Olasupo Ojo emphasized that it’s high time Nigeria transformed human rights from mere paper rights to actual rights.

Barrister Ojo made this assertion while delivering a paper at the 2025 annual general conference of the CDHR

Themed: ‘Human Rights As Our Everyday Essentials: Fundamental, Inviolable, Indiscriminate’.

He noted that human rights should be enjoyed, exercised, and defended by people, using government instruments.

Ojo acknowledged some progress, including the establishment of the National Human Rights Commission, but argued that more needs to be done to prevent human rights violations.

He criticized the government’s focus on addressing violations rather than preventing them, stating that significant resources are spent on redressing violations instead of prioritizing human rights actualization.

The former CDHR President highlighted the disparity in access to healthcare, with government officials seeking medical attention abroad while the general population struggles to access quality healthcare.

He stressed that it’s time to move beyond defining human rights and focus on realizing and actualizing them, noting that 77 years have passed since the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and 26 years since Nigeria’s transition to democracy.

The guest speaker questioned how many generations must pass before government prioritizes human rights, suggesting that those in power benefit from the status quo and therefore lack concern for human rights.

Speaking about the CDHR’s plans for change, the re-elected President, Comrade Debo Adeniran, stated that among civil society organizations, CDHR aims to become more formidable by avoiding divisible issues and fostering solidarity.
