JONAPD calls for review of social security allowances in Jigawa

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPD) has called for the review of the beneficiaries of social security allowances in Jigawa State.

Chairman Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPD) Jigawa State chapter, Comrade Muhammad Usman made the appeal while speaking during the celebration of International day for persons with Disabilities on Tuesday, held at NUT Secretariat, Dutse.

He explained that there is a need for the state government to review the list of beneficiaries and replace those who have died for others to benefit from the allowance.

He said the social allowance was introduced in 2007 under Governor Sule Lamido with over 4,000 beneficiaries across the 27 local government areas.

“Initially each local government has at least 151 beneficiaries of N7,000 social security allowance monthly. The number of beneficiaries has been dropping but still, there was no replacement, presently the local government with the highest beneficiaries has only 81 and the least is 31 beneficiaries,” he stated.

Mr Usman, therefore, appealed to the state government to allow more persons with disabilities to benefit from the allowance by conducting a replacement exercise.

He noted that Jigawa is the only state that caters to the well-being of persons with disabilities by way of providing social security allowance, free education policy for both persons with disabilities and their children, inclusive education framework, and the establishment of disability desk offices across the MDAs and disability trust fund.
