Lagos is Drowning in Waste: CAIDOV Berates LAWMA, Writes Open Letter to Governor Sanwo-Olu

The Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence (CAIDOV) has raised alarm over the deplorable and dangerous state of waste management in Lagos State, calling it a public health emergency.
In an Open Letter to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the group said Lagos, the Centre of Excellence, is fast becoming a Centre of Refuse, with heaps of refuse taking over streets, medians, markets and drainage channels across the state.
CAIDOV in a press release signed by its Executive Director,Gbenga Soloki noted that the failure to evacuate waste promptly has led to blocked drainages, perennial flooding, outbreak of communicable diseases, and loss of environmental dignity for a mega-city that generates over 13,000 tonnes of waste daily.
The group therefore demands Immediate declaration of a State of Emergency on waste management;
,overhauling of the PSP system and sanctioning of non-performing operators;
and adequate funding and strengthening of LAWMA to be visible and responsive;
The group further posited that there should strict enforcement against indiscriminate dumping;
As well as revival of public sensitization and community engagement on waste disposal.
“Lagosians pay waste bills, markets pay, government funds LAWMA, yet there is no value for money. Lagos cannot be the 5th largest economy in Africa and still be one of the dirtiest cities. LAWMA must stand up and be responsive,” Soloki added.
CAIDOV warned that it will continue to monitor the situation and mobilize residents to demand accountability if urgent action is not taken.
