Lawyers Petition AIG Over Detained N16m Honda, Alleged Disappearance of Seller

A law firm, GH Agoro & Co, has petitioned the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Headquarters, Lagos, over the continued seizure of a 2019 Honda car valued at N16 million and the alleged disappearance of the seller after he was granted bail.
In a letter dated August 13, 2026, which was signed by a lawyer in the chamber, Ade Osinaike, Esq and addressed to the AIG, the law firm said that the vehicle, a white, yet-to-be-registered Honda, was released to police officers at Zone 2 on February 17, 2026, following a petition by an individual who claimed that he had handed the car to a dealer to sell but was neither paid nor given the vehicle back.
The lawyers, acting on behalf of their client, Mr Sherif Omotara, a car dealer, disputed the circumstances surrounding the seizure, saying that their client had purchased the vehicle for a customer, Mr Sodiq Alao Aremu.
According to the petition, Omotara paid N16 million for the car to the seller, adding that a receipt for the transaction was attached to the letter as evidence of payment.
The letter stated that the vehicle was kept at Omotara’s car shop pending collection by the customer, but he was subsequently invited to Zone 2 over the matter.
“Our client paid the sum for the car, kept it at his car shop waiting for the owner to come for same, but to his shock, he was sent an invitation letter to your zone regarding the car,” the law firm stated.
The lawyers said that their client’s appearance at the police headquarters brought to light that the petitioner had allegedly received N15.5 million out of the N16 million paid for the vehicle.
The petition further alleged that the petitioner was later told that Omotara was no longer interested in the car and wanted a refund, following which the money was returned to the seller.
The law firm claimed that the seller subsequently converted the money to personal use.
However, the letter did not include a response from the seller to the allegations.
GH Agoro & Co said that the seller was invited by the police and granted bail in line with the law, but allegedly absconded afterwards.
“The seller was invited by your zone and was granted bail as expected under the law, but the said seller has absconded since he was granted bail,” the letter stated.
The lawyers also raised concerns about the role of the surety who stood for the suspect, arguing that the surety should be required to produce him or face the consequences of failing to do so.
The petition urged the police authorities to address the prolonged seizure of the vehicle and the alleged disappearance of the seller, whose actions, according to the law firm, had left its client caught in a dispute over a transaction for which payment had already been made.
The vehicle was identified in the letter by its chassis number, IHGV1F180A246442.
The lawyers said that copies of the receipt for the car and the police invitation letter were attached to their correspondence.
As of the date of the petition, the letter did not state whether the police had taken any further action to recover the vehicle or locate the seller.
The response of the Zone 2 Police Command was not included in the material made available for this report.
