NDLEA operatives intercept 76.9kg drugs in Rivers

About 76.9kg of Canadian loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, from four used vehicles, in a container marked MSDU6686346 from Canada, have been intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex, Onne, Rivers State.

A joint inspection of the shipment with men of the Nigeria Customs Service seized the illicit drugs between June 1 and June 2.

Femi Babafemi, the spokesperson for the NDLEA, in a statement on Sunday, said that the seizure followed the request for 100% examination of the shipment as a result of earlier intelligence received by the agency on the container.

According to him, the operatives stormed Iwe forest in the Iwe community, the Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, where they located a large warehouse of skunk, used to store 231 jumbo bags of the psychotropic substance weighing 3,003kg, which was set ablaze.

He added that the operation, involving hundreds of well-armed NDLEA operatives in the early hours of Tuesday, May 30, followed intelligence that a wanted drug kingpin had stored tons of the illicit substance in the forest ready for distribution to other parts of the country.

The NDLEA spokesman explained, “In Kano State, two suspects, Ma’aruf Rabiu and Abubakar Mustapha, were arrested on May 30 along Zaria-Kano Road with 260 blocks of cannabis weighing 139.4kg, while Auwal Ibrahim was nabbed with 38kg of the same substance the following day along Kaduna-Abuja Road, same day 35-year-old female suspect, Bilkisu Isiya, was arrested at Birnin Yero, Kaduna in possession of 5.6kg cannabis.”

He stated that in Borno State, two suspects, Abubakar Usman (aka Alhaji Mai Kero) and Adamu Yusuf, were arrested at Bargu village, Shani Local Government Area, on June 3, with 165 blocks of skunk weighing 140.7kg, adding that their arrest was effected with military support, deep inside insurgents’ environment.

A female suspect, Hauwa Ibrahim, 25, according to the statement, was nabbed in the same village with 6.4kg of the psychoactive substance, stressing that another suspect, Alhaji Abubakar, 27, was arrested at Njimtilo checkpoint with 4,200 ampoules of pentazocine injection and different quantities of D5 and exol-5 tablets.

He said that a 30-year-old suspect, Iroko Wasiu was arrested at a drug joint at Sabo Aba-Awolowo, along Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway on May 30, and 31.2kg of cannabis was recovered from him, pointing out that two suspects – Deji Adelabu, 35, and Mutiu Salau, 37, were nabbed the following day in the Sabo area along Oyo-Ogbomoso Road and Awuro Dada area in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, with a total of 8kg cannabis recovered from them.

Speaking at the event, the President and Executive Producer, AFRIMA, Mike Dada, delivered a stirring charge to the young talents, predicting that they could become dominant forces in African music within the next two to three years. Standing before an audience of entertainment executives, artistes, influencers and industry stakeholders at the prestigious Voyage Lagos, Dada said the Diamonds had been carefully selected because of their exceptional talent and potential to shape the future of African music. “You are not here by accident. You were chosen because we saw something special in you. We saw talent, passion, discipline and the potential to become stars not just in your countries, but across Africa and the world. “I am challenging you today to go out and dominate the music space in the next two to three years. The opportunity is here. The platform is here. The spotlight is on you. The next move belongs to you,” he said. Dada said AFRIMA’s vision extends beyond celebrating established stars, stressing that the awards platform was committed to building a pipeline of globally competitive African talents. He noted that Africa’s growing youth population presents a unique opportunity for governments and industry leaders to invest in the creative sector. “The world is moving towards a content creation economy. Content is the new currency. Young people are creating value every day through music, digital media, fashion and entertainment. Our culture is our competitive advantage. The question is how we can leverage it for economic benefit, job creation and sustainable development. That is the direction AFRIMA is focused on, and we will continue to invest in initiatives that empower young Africans through creativity,” he said. The seven Diamonds earned their place after a rigorous selection process conducted by AFRIMA’s International Jury before being introduced to a wider audience through performances at the AFRIMA Music Village during the ninth AFRIMA Awards. At the party in their honour, the Diamonds once again took centre stage, delivering electrifying performances that left guests cheering and offered a glimpse into what could become the next wave of African music stars. An emotional Black Astro described the initiative as a turning point in his career. “This opportunity has changed everything for me. AFRIMA has given us visibility, confidence and access to people who can help shape our future. We are ready to show the world what we can do,” he said. Mayowa Afolabi said, “Being named an AFRIMA Diamond is a dream come true. This platform has given us an opportunity that many young artistes spend years searching for.” Ellacentric also expressed gratitude for the journey, describing the experience as a powerful reminder that perseverance and hard work can eventually pay off.
