New policies are being developed, and draft copies will be brought to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval soon, according to Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the minister of science, innovation, and technology.

Dr. Onu made the announcement at the National Council on Science, Technology, and Innovation’s opening session in Abuja.

The minister said all policies initiated in the past by the federal ministry of science, technology and innovation had made very significant contributions to national development.

According to him, the policies also contribute in making the economy to be knowledge-based and innovation-driven as against the previous situation where the economy was almost dependent on commodities.

Dr Onu stressed the need for all the states to take full advantage of the council’s meeting for planning the pathway for the development of their states.

Earlier, the governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, represented by his deputy, Dr Yusuf Gawuna, said for any nation to attain sustainable development it must embrace, deploy and apply science, technology and in an appropriate and efficient manner.

He added that since the revolution of science and technology and the industrial revolution, it had been observed that the world was owned by those who knew technology and not by those who bought technology.

Meanwhile, Dr Onu said the National Science, Technology and Innovation Roadmap, 2017-2030, the National Strategy for Competitiveness in Raw Materials and Products Development; the Presidential Executive Order 5, the Methanol Fuel Policy and the Leather Products Policy had contributed in improving the global competitiveness ranking of Nigeria as recorded by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
