Nigeria, Benin Deepen Border Diplomacy to Safeguard Trade and Regional Security

The delegation visited key security and customs authorities in the neighbouring country, including the Beninese Customs Administration and the Benin Republic Police Force, to explore stronger collaborative measures against transnational crimes and improve legitimate cross-border trade.
The engagement reflects the determination of both countries to address shared security challenges while promoting economic integration, in line with broader regional cooperation objectives and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Central to the discussions was the establishment of stronger intelligence-sharing mechanisms to identify and disrupt smuggling networks, arms trafficking, irregular migration and other forms of cross-border criminal activity.
Both delegations also examined opportunities for coordinated border patrols, particularly along vulnerable and porous routes, as part of efforts to protect border communities, national economies and frontline security personnel.
Beyond security concerns, the meeting addressed the need to improve trade facilitation through streamlined customs clearance procedures, Coordinated Border Management (CBM), the One-Stop Border Post framework and the adoption of technology-driven processes to eliminate operational bottlenecks.

Speaking during the engagement, Deputy Comptroller Ibrahim stressed the importance of sustained cooperation between neighbouring countries, noting that the fight against transnational crime requires collective action and effective communication.
He said: “Building a closer and more fruitful relationship with our neighbours is a fundamental priority. Criminal elements do not respect artificial boundaries; therefore, our response must be unified, swift and uncompromising. This visit solidifies our shared dedication to safeguarding our economic assets, protecting our officers on the frontlines, and ensuring that legitimate traders thrive safely.”
The Beninese delegation, led by the Customs Area Controller in charge of Igolo-Idiroko, Col. Kounozo, and Commissioner of Police Moussa, welcomed the initiative and commended the renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
They emphasised that effective collaboration among customs administrations and other security agencies remains essential to tackling cross-border threats, improving border governance and sustaining regional stability.
The meeting further reinforced the shared resolve of Nigeria and Benin to develop a more efficient and secure border management system that supports lawful commerce without compromising national security.
The renewed partnership is expected to strengthen operational coordination, improve intelligence-led enforcement and create a more conducive environment for legitimate traders and businesses operating along the Nigeria-Benin border.
