The Pest Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN) has celebrated its 35 years of existence with membership training, highlighting three decades of significant contributions to safe environment across Nigeria.
The training was to acquaint members with more knowledge that will enhance their professionalism and to prepare them for the challenges of the profession and macro economic environment.
The event with the theme: “35 years of protecting health and safety: Leading the way in environmental excellence and shaping the future of pest control in Nigeria” was well attended by the association’s members across the country.
The 3-in-one event provided a platform for the group to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Industry award night to review the past, present and future of the association’s financial standard.
It also used to induct no fewer than 30 new members, presentation of awards and presidential service recognition to those that have contributed immensely to the growth of the association.
In his welcoming address, the Association’s National President, PCO Olakunle Williams reiterated the group’s commitment to innovation, expansion and professional excellence, adding that the association will continue to strengthen partnerships, broaden its reach and invest in the continuous development of members to meet evolving challenges.
He said PECAN, has over 35 years remained steadfast in its mission of promoting pest control excellence and enhancing public health in Nigeria.
He explained that PECAN, as frontline professionals, played a vital role in sanitation, disinfection and public health interventions that prevented the deadly COVID-19 virus from spreading, saying the group’s efforts saved lives and earned them the national’s gratitude, cementing their role as key players in Nigeria’s public health landscape.
PCO Williams further explained that PECAN has consistently demonstrated leadership in addressing cholera and Lassa fever outbreaks, adding that the fumigator experts, through educational campaigns, pest eradication programmes and sanitation drives enable them to prevent the diseases from spreading and as well saved lives.
He pledged that PECAN would continue prioritizes capacity building through workshops, certifications, continuous education and equipping members with the latest skills and knowledge, ensuring they remain leaders in the pest control industry. “We have evolved over the years, but one constant remains: our desire to do more. We believe that so much more can be accomplished,” PCO Olakunle stated.
Among the keynote speakers were MD/CEO Orkin Nigeria Ltd, PCO Terungwa Abari. He delivered a paperwork titled: “Pest control and public health – Building a safer Nation”; Dr Tade Adeniyi Olanrewaju delivered lecture on: “Strategies for effective partnerships with with farmers, government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to create more robust pest management system”;  Mr Lewis Gregory Adeyemi of LASEPA’s presentation focused on: “Current trends in chemical handling and warehousing regulatory oversite” while the last speaker , EHCON Registrar, Dr. Baba Mohammed presented lecture on: “Building resilience in pest control through effective risk management and crisis preparedness”
Amongst the awardees were Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya; Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Hon Tokunbo Philip Wahab and General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr Babatunde Ajayi
 
The National Public Relations Officer/Chairman, PECAN 35th years Anniversary Planning Committee, Dr. Olabisi Dennis while delivering his  vote of thanks, appreciated those that have contributed immensely to the resounding success of the just concluded Mandatory Continuing Development Training Programme (MCDTP), Annual General Meeting, and Awards Night.
He said the event would not have been as impactful and memorable without their unwavering support, dedication, and collaboration. “Your presence, participation, and contributions—whether as sponsors, exhibitors, partners, guests, or members—played a pivotal role in making these celebrations truly remarkable.
“To our esteemed facilitators, awardees, Members of the Press and participants, your insights, excellence, and presence have once again reaffirmed PECAN’s commitment to advancing pest control practices in Nigeria. Your efforts inspire us to continue striving for innovation and professionalism in our field.
Special thanks go to the planning committee, volunteers, and PECAN leadership for their tireless efforts and meticulous planning. Together, we have raised the standard and set a new benchmark for future events.
