Trader docked over failure to repay over N100,000 debt to bread vendor

Yemisi Odunayo, a 20-year-old bread seller, was on Tuesday docked before an Akure Magistrate’s Court over an alleged debt.

The defendant committed the offence at Iloro Market, Oke Aro axis in Akure, Ondo State capital, in July 2022.

According to the police prosecutor, Taiwo Oniyere, the defendant deceived Toyin Johnbull three times and obtained bread worth N168,000 with the promise of remitting the money as soon as she sold it, but she reneged.

The prosecutor said the defendant converted the money for her use after failing on her agreement to remit the money after the sales.

Odunayo, facing a one-count charge, entered a not-guilty plea to the charge brought against her.

According to Section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap. 37, Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006, the offence committed is against the law and is punishable by a fine.

The prosecutor’s request for an adjournment was opposed by the defendant’s attorney, O.l. Abu, and appealed to the magistrate to grant his client bail in most liberal terms.

The Magistrate gave the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in the same amount.

The bail was given by the Magistrate following facts that the defendant’s husband could stand in with documentation of his business operations within the court’s jurisdiction.

He also said the house of the surety must be verified by the police and the court official, after which the case was adjourned till December.
