Transfer: Barcelona terminate contract of defender

Barcelona have terminated Samuel Umtiti’s contract, as manager Xavi no longer wants him at the club.

The Frenchman joined Barcelona from Lyon back in 2016, putting forth brilliant performances in his initial days in Spain.

The French defender was, however, struck by a string of injuries that disrupted his ascent and subsequently nudged him down the club’s pecking order.

The former France international hardly got the chance to strut his stuff on the pitch over recent seasons, and was sent on loan to Lecce last summer.

The club released a statement on their website saying, “FC Barcelona and the player Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement for the release of the contract that the player had with the Club until the end of the 2025/26 season.

“FC Barcelona expresses its gratitude to Umtiti and wishes him luck and success in the future.”
