World Cup: It’s unfair to make him scapegoat – Brad Friedel defends England star

Former Tottenham goalkeeper, Brad Friedel has defended England midfielder, Mason Mount after the player suffered criticism at the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Friedel said it is unfair to make Mount a scapegoat following his display in England’s 0-0 draw with the USA.

Mount has started both of the Three Lions’ Group B matches with Gareth Southgate’s side beating Iran 6-2 before a 0-0 draw with the United States.

The Chelsea star played 71 minutes before he was replaced by Manchester City’s Phil Foden against Iran but played for the whole match in the goalless draw with the USA.

Many, including Manchester United legend, Gary Neville, felt that Mount should have been replaced by Foden in the match against the USA, with England lacking creativity and in need of a spark.

But Friedel has now defended Mount ahead of England’s last Group B tie against Wales on Tuesday.

“I think criticism of Mount after one match is unfair,” Friedel told Online Casino.

“Everyone can have a bad performance and he’s been made a scapegoat a bit which is not right.

“Going individually into one man’s display is not right. Looking into [USA stars] Tyler Adams and Yunus Musah would be a better idea as they were fantastic and they deserve more praise.

“If Mount continues to have underwhelming performances, then criticism is warranted, but you can’t pick him out individually for one poor game.

“Mount came up against players who are really physical.”
