Comptroller Murtala Muazu has assumed office as the 33rd Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), pledging to build on the achievements recorded by his predecessor, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba.

Muazu, who took over from Oshoba following his retirement after 35 years in service, said the command would continue to facilitate legitimate trade while protecting the nation’s economic interests and security.

Speaking shortly after assuming office, the new controller commended Oshoba’s performance, particularly in revenue generation, compliance and trade facilitation, describing the achievements as worthy of emulation.

He described Apapa Port as strategic to Nigeria’s economic growth and pledged to consolidate the gains already recorded while working to improve the command’s performance.

Muazu said his leadership would align with the Comptroller General of Customs’ policy thrust of consolidation, collaboration and innovation.

On revenue generation, he said the command would adhere to due process and applicable policy documents, including the Common External Tariff, while ensuring that compliant consignments are not unnecessarily delayed during the clearance process.

He also pledged to promote a knowledge-driven command through sustainable human capital development, with emphasis on professionalism among officers and men.

Muazu is an alumnus of Bayero University Kano and the University of Lagos, where he obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees respectively.

He was promoted to the rank of Comptroller of Customs in late 2025 following a leadership retreat and strategic promotions approved by the Nigeria Customs Service Board.

He has represented the Service at strategic economic initiatives at local and international fora and has served in various areas of customs operations, including Area 2 Command in Onne, Ports Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML) in Lagos and Customs Headquarters.
