Drama as Imo workers sack NLC Chairman…. march to Government house to present a new one
Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state sacked their chairman, Austin Chilakpu.
The workers said they removed Chilakpu because his leadership failed to negotiate properly with state government over their welfare.
The workers who sacked Chilakpu at the state secretariat in Owerri immediately constituted a caretaker committee.
They thereafter proceeded to the Government House to present the new NLC caretaker committee, led by Ndubuisi Ucheghara, to the governor, Hope Uzodimma.
Ucheghara, who spoke to newsmen, said the NLC in the state had been liberated.
He said, “What prompted the change of leadership was the recalcitrant nature of the Austin leadership. In world over, labour exist to complement the government and if there is a development, there must be synergy between the government and labour.
“We have to negotiate and use other networks to get what we want and if one’s personal interest conflicts with that of the interest of those you are leading, then there problem; that is among the reasons we removed Austin Chilakpu.”
Earlier, Chilakpu accused the state government of hiring hoodlums to protest against him and invade his office.
Scores of people, believed to be workers, had on Monday forced their way into the office, noting that Chilakpu had retired as a public servant, and therefore should quit as the chairman of the NLC.
