Lagos Police Begin Clampdown on Vehicles Without Visible Number Plates

Motorists in Lagos driving vehicles with covered, obscured, defaced, unauthorised or no registration number plates risk having their vehicles impounded as the Lagos State Police Command begins a statewide enforcement exercise from Monday, June 15, 2026.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adebisi Abimbola, the operation is aimed at enhancing public safety, strengthening security and preventing criminals from concealing their identities while carrying out unlawful activities.
“This enforcement exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists. Rather, it is a proactive security measure designed to enhance the capacity of police operatives to identify vehicles, investigate crimes and track criminal suspects.”
The Command said any vehicle found violating the directive would be impounded and subjected to investigation in line with existing laws.
Residents, transport operators and fleet owners have been advised to ensure their vehicles carry valid and clearly visible number plates and that all vehicle documents are up to date.
The police also urged Lagosians to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities through its emergency lines.
