NAFDAC Receives Seized Expired Pharmaceuticals from Customs for Regulatory Action

 

Receiving the intercepted consignment on behalf of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Deputy Director, Port Inspection Directorate, Pharm. Adepoju Bayo Raufu, commended the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for its vigilance, professionalism, and sustained collaboration in safeguarding Nigerians from the dangers posed by expired and harmful pharmaceutical products.

He assured that NAFDAC would immediately initiate the necessary regulatory procedures to ensure the safe disposal of the expired pharmaceutical products in strict compliance with established laws, regulations, and safety protocols.

Also speaking, the Zonal Director, NAFDAC South-South Zone, Pharm. Chukwuma Oligbu, described the handover as a testament to the strong synergy between NAFDAC and the Nigeria Customs Service. He applauded the leadership of the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Salamatu Atuluku, and officers of the Port Harcourt Area I Command for their professionalism, diligence, and unwavering commitment to protecting public health.

Pharm. Oligbu further called for sustained collaboration among security, regulatory, and enforcement agencies to strengthen efforts aimed at preventing the importation and circulation of expired, substandard, and unsafe pharmaceutical products into the country.

The ceremony culminated in the formal handover of the intercepted expired pharmaceutical products, along with the relevant documentation, by the Nigeria Customs Service to NAFDAC for appropriate regulatory action and safe disposal.

The exercise reaffirmed the shared commitment of both agencies to safeguarding public health, strengthening border security, and ensuring that only safe, genuine, and duly regulated pharmaceutical products are permitted into Nigeria through its ports.
