Nestlé Nigeria Pioneers Waste-Free Future Through Employee-Led Initiatives and Community Engagement

In line with its global vision of a waste-free future, Nestlé Nigeria is spearheading a multifaceted approach to promote environmental sustainability and combat plastic pollution. Through employee-driven initiatives, community engagement, and partnerships, the company aims to protect, renew, and restore the environment.

Employee-Led Initiatives

Nestlé Nigeria’s employee plastics collection scheme encourages staff to sort waste at source and recycle, earning points redeemable for rewards. This program has fostered a culture of sustainability within the organization.

Community Engagement

The company has partnered with the Lagos Business School Sustainability Centre to train journalists on effective communication of environmental best practices. Additionally, Nestlé’s Sustainability Training for Kids, implemented with the International Climate Change Development Initiative, educates children on waste management and sustainability.

Collaborations and Partnerships

Nestlé Nigeria joined forces with the Africa Clean-Up Initiative for the World Clean-Up Day, engaging over 400 employees in market clean-up exercises across 12 locations. The company is also a leading member of the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), driving post-consumption waste management and recycling.

Victoria Uwadoka, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager, emphasized Nestlé’s commitment to improving post-consumer plastic waste management and accelerating sustainability education. Dr. Alexander Akhigbe, Founder/CEO of African Clean-Up Initiative, praised the partnership, highlighting the proper management of over 6,660kg of solid waste and 79kg of recyclables collected.

Community Feedback

Comrade Aremu Komolafe, Ojuwoye market committee member, applauded Nestlé Nigeria’s clean-up initiative, supporting the Lagos State government’s environmental sanitation efforts.
