Obasanjo, Peter Obi, Dignitaries Grace Launch of Charly Boy’s Memoir, 999, as Ex-President Reflects on Leadership Mistakes

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Labour Party’s 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi, veteran broadcaster Bisi Olatilo, business mogul Leo Stan Ekeh, Sen. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, popular comedian MC Gordons and several distinguished Nigerians on Friday gathered in Lagos for the public presentation of Charles Oputa’s memoir, 999, and the unveiling of the Charly Boy Foundation.

Held at the Alliance Française de Lagos/Mike Adenuga Centre, Osborne Road, Ikoyi, the event combined the launch of Charly Boy’s memoir with a fundraising campaign for the Charly Boy Foundation aimed at promoting awareness, early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

In his opening remarks, Chairman of Zinox Group, Leo Stan Ekeh, reflected on his longstanding relationship with Charly Boy, revealing that both of them attended Holy Ghost College, Owerri. He described the veteran entertainer as a courageous and unconventional Nigerian whose commitment to speaking truth to power has remained unwavering over the decades.

The memoir was reviewed by renowned communications expert, Dr. Austin Tam-George, who described 999 as a deeply personal and compelling account of Charly Boy’s life, chronicling his journey through family, identity, activism, resilience and purpose while offering readers valuable lessons on courage, perseverance and social responsibility.

The event’s biggest highlight came during a fireside conversation between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Charly Boy. Reflecting on his years in office, Obasanjo admitted that selecting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as his running mate in the 1999 presidential election was “the greatest mistake” of his presidency. He noted that every leader makes mistakes but said it was one decision he would not repeat.

Beyond the political reflections, the gathering celebrated the enduring legacy of the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, to whom the memoir is dedicated. Speakers praised the late jurist’s unwavering commitment to justice, integrity and the rule of law while commending Charly Boy for preserving his father’s values through literature and advocacy.

Tagged, “A Story. A Legacy. A Rebellion in Ink,” 999 presents an unfiltered account of Charly Boy’s remarkable life from his upbringing as the son of one of Nigeria’s most respected jurists to his emergence as one of the country’s most outspoken entertainers, social commentators and advocates for justice. The memoir also candidly recounts his personal struggles, activism, family experiences, health challenges, and lessons from a life lived without compromise.

Speaking on the significance of the title, Charly Boy explained that 999 symbolizes new beginnings rather than an ending, saying the memoir represents a new chapter in his life as he approaches his 76th birthday. He expressed hope that readers would identify with the experiences captured in the book and draw inspiration from the challenges he overcame.

The event attracted prominent personalities from politics, business, media and entertainment, reinforcing Charly Boy’s enduring influence on Nigeria’s cultural and democratic landscape while highlighting the importance of literature, advocacy and public health awareness.
