Police To Deliver 1,000 New Housing Units For Officers In Lagos By Feb 2027
The redevelopment and rehabilitation of police barracks across Lagos State have gained significant momentum, with 21 projects currently at various stages of construction and renovation, the Nigeria Police Force has said.
The projects will deliver 1,000 new housing units for officers by February 2027.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, disclosed this during an inspection tour of police barracks and other facilities across the state, where he assessed ongoing housing, rehabilitation and infrastructure projects.
Disu stressed that providing decent accommodation for police personnel remained a critical component of officers’ welfare, noting that their living conditions could have a direct impact on morale, effectiveness and service delivery.
According to the Police, about 600 buildings within the barracks have already been refurbished, while a comprehensive headcount of personnel occupying police quarters has been completed to establish actual housing requirements and enhance the management of the facilities.
The IGP’s inspection also covered the Police Hospital, Falomo, which is undergoing renovation as part of efforts to strengthen medical services available to police officers and their families.
The redevelopment programme also involves the removal of shanties and other informal structures around the estates to restore order, reclaim space and facilitate the construction of planned housing and supporting infrastructure.
Disu appealed to officers and their families to remain patient during the ongoing works, acknowledging that large-scale redevelopment projects could inevitably cause some temporary disruption.
The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Lagos State Government under the LagosHOMS housing framework, with private developers expected to play a significant role in the delivery of the projects.
Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, said the partnership was aimed at improving the living conditions of police personnel while also unlocking the development potential of existing police estates.
She acknowledged challenges associated with relocation, demolition and land reclamation but said the redevelopment programme had continued despite the difficulties.
Benson-Awoyinka disclosed that full-scale development is now underway, with at least 1,000 housing units expected to be completed by February 2027.
The development, she said, represents a major step towards providing police personnel with more decent and sustainable accommodation while transforming existing police estates into better-planned residential communities
