The Lagos State Police Command has strengthened its fight against violent crime with the commissioning of the newly renovated Operational Base of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) at Ijora Olopa, alongside the donation of seven fully equipped tactical vehicles and other operational equipment by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF).

The commissioning ceremony, held on Thursday, July 2, was led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, and the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan. The event underscored Lagos State’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and rapid response to violent crimes.

In addition to the seven tactical vehicles donated to the VCRU, the LSSTF also presented 1,000 operational boots and 1,200 raincoats to the Lagos State Police Command to improve the welfare and operational readiness of officers across the state.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Ogunsan described Lagos as “the safest state in Nigeria,” attributing the achievement to the unwavering commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to security and the collaborative efforts of government, security agencies, the private sector and residents.

“Lagos is the safest state in Nigeria as it stands today. We are matchless, unparalleled and unequal,” Ogunsan declared.

He noted that security has become a collective responsibility in Lagos, adding that the state government has consistently invested in innovative policing initiatives.

According to him, the newly established VCRU, an initiative of the Inspector-General of Police, will enjoy continuous support from the Lagos State Government through the LSSTF.

“Any idea you have security-wise, our soil is very fertile. The moment you plant it on the soil of Lagos, it will grow. Don’t be afraid of funding. We will fund you. We will support you,” he assured.

Dr. Ogunsan also announced the donation of a brand-new power generator to the unit to enhance its operational efficiency.

While urging residents to disregard fake news capable of creating panic, he maintained that Lagos remains peaceful and secure.

“Nothing is burning in Lagos. Lagos is safe and secured,” he said, encouraging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.

The LSSTF CEO also appealed for sustained donations from individuals, corporate organisations, professional bodies and community groups, noting that the Trust Fund does not receive statutory funding from government.

“We don’t get funds from the government. Whatever we receive from donors, we invest directly in strengthening the security agencies,” he explained.

Earlier, Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, described the Violent Crime Response Unit as one of the visionary initiatives of the Inspector-General of Police aimed at tackling violent crimes through intelligence-driven operations and coordinated tactical responses.

He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and the LSSTF for their unwavering investment in security infrastructure and logistics.

“The Lagos State Security Trust Fund has remained a dependable partner in our collective pursuit of a safer and more secure Lagos,” the police commissioner stated.

CP Tijani charged officers of the new unit to carry out their responsibilities professionally and with respect for citizens’ rights.

“The VCRU was created to respond swiftly and professionally to violent crimes, not as a unit for harassment, intimidation or abuse of law-abiding citizens,” he warned.

The Officer-in-Charge of the VCRU, CSP Oyindamola Oremosu, assured residents that officers of the unit would operate with courage, discipline, integrity and strict adherence to the rule of law.

He also urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible intelligence, stressing that security remains a shared responsibility.

The event also witnessed the inauguration of a civilian oversight board comprising notable stakeholders, including Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, human rights advocate Dr. Segun Awosanya (Segalink), Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (Lagos Chapter), Engr. Olalekan Ibrahim Adigun, Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Apostle Kehinde A. Showemimo, and other community representatives.

Speaking on behalf of the board, Dr. Segun Awosanya described the establishment of the VCRU as a landmark initiative that would strengthen intelligence-led policing and accountability within the Lagos Police Command.

Similarly, Apostle Kehinde Showemimo praised the civilian oversight structure, saying it would enhance transparency while safeguarding the rights of residents.

Traditional rulers, including the Oba of Ijora, represented by the Bashorun of Ijora, Chief Hakeem Ojora, and the Aare Onikoyi of Yorubaland, Aare Tomori Williams, pledged continued community support for the new unit, describing its location in Ijora as strategic to securing both the mainland and island corridors of Lagos.

The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of the renovated operational base and the official handover of the tactical vehicles and other operational equipment, reaffirming Lagos State’s commitment to strengthening security through sustained investment, innovation and collaboration between government, security agencies and the public.
